About this Webinar
Description:
Every year, hundreds of new image analysis tools are created and released for analysis of microscopy data. Few of these will stand the test of time though - with many becoming unusable within a few years (or even months!) of publication. How can we make long-term maintenance and update of these tools easier? How can we ensure new updates don't break existing functionality? In this talk, I will focus on 'good software practices' that help make your software more robust e.g. automated testing, dependency updates and versioning. I will give examples from Fiji / napari plugins (as these are very popular for volume electron microscopy data), but the general principles should be applicable to any kind of image analysis software.
Speaker biography:
Dr Kimberly Meechan is a research software engineer in UCL's Advanced Research Computing Centre (ARC). She specialises in image-analysis software, and has contributed to various open-source packages including: Crosshair, MoBIE and BrainGlobe. She has a PhD from EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) focusing on volume electron microscopy data, and a postdoc at the British Museum focusing on X-ray CT / 3D scans. She is a maintainer of the Data Carpentry 'Image Processing with Python' course, and regularly teaches python / napari courses at UCL.
Intended audience:
Open to anyone interested
Level:
This talk is aimed at developers of Fiji / napari plugins (or other kinds of image analysis software), or those who are interested in creating them in future. Some basic coding knowledge would be helpful, as short examples will be given for Fiji and napari.
